Today marks a historic moment for athletics in the Sutherland Shire.
Following Special General Meetings held by both clubs, members of Port Hacking Little Athletics Centre and Sutherland District Athletics Club have voted in favour of the proposed merger, bringing together two organisations that have played a vital role in the development of athletics in our community for generations.
For decades, both clubs have provided opportunities for thousands of athletes to participate, compete, develop friendships and achieve their sporting goals. Together, we have celebrated local champions, nurtured future representative athletes, and built a strong athletics culture that has become an important part of the sporting fabric of the Sutherland Shire.
This merger represents far more than an administrative change. It is a significant investment in the future of our sport and a commitment to creating a stronger, more sustainable athletics pathway for current and future generations.
By uniting under a single club structure, we will create a seamless athletics journey from Tiny Tots and Little Athletics through to Under 20, Open and Masters competition. Athletes and families will benefit from greater collaboration, stronger development pathways, expanded coaching and officiating opportunities, and a unified athletics community working towards common goals.
Both committees voted to recommend the merger and would like to thank members for their support, engagement, thoughtful questions and confidence throughout the process. The positive response from both memberships reflects a shared vision for the future of our sport and a recognition that we can achieve more together.
While we proudly acknowledge and celebrate the rich history of both organisations, we are equally excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. The traditions, values and community spirit that have defined both clubs will continue to be honoured as we build a new chapter for athletics in the Sutherland Shire.
There is still important work ahead as we progress through the transition process, and members will continue to be kept informed throughout the next season as plans to unify develop.
We look forward to working together to create a thriving and inclusive athletics community that will serve the Sutherland Shire for many years to come.
