History

Our athletics club has a proud history spanning more than 60 years in the Sutherland Shire. Our members have represented at all levels including local, state, national and international level competition in running, throwing, jumping and racewalking events.

Sutherland District Athletics Club was formed 1959 by a group of Sutherland Shire athletes keen to have local venues for athletic participation and Shire representation at State, National and International events.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, athletics was a very popular sport in the Shire with the absence of alternative sporting facilities and opportunities. Many well known, high profile athletes have been members of Sutherland. Today, as always, the model and culture of the club includes a strong focus on participation for all ages and abilities in athletics in both in stadium and out of stadium events.

Many talented international athletes trained and competed for Sutherland District Athletics Club including Marjorie Jackson, Eloise Wellings, Patrick Fakiye, Ollie Hoare, & Alexandra Hulley.

Athletics forms the basis of many sports. The basic skills including endurance, speed, strength, power and coordination can be developed through regular participation in athletics.

Sutherland District Athletics Club caters for everyone from the novice to the elite and encourages all members of the family to be involved. Our unique handicap and points systems award athletes for their improvement over the season as well as their placings each week.

The club continues to offer an incentive scheme for athletes achieving at state, national and international events.
